Jean-françois Janinet, Portrait Of A Young Woman, Etching, 18th Century

An etching in the style of red chalk depicting the face of a young woman with delicate features, her eyes cast down and a graceful smile on her lips. This is one of the plates illustrating the instructional book *Cahier de Principes du Dessin d'après nature* (1773), based on drawings by its author, Pierre Thomas Le Clerc. Our engraving is numbered 6 and comes from the 9th notebook.

Signed “J.F. Janinet sc.” in the lower right corner.

Jean-François Janinet (1752–1814) was a French engraver. Initially trained in painting at the Royal Academy, he quickly turned to engraving and made a name for himself through his prints based on works by Greuze, Fragonard, Watteau, and other artists then in vogue. During the Revolution, he turned to topical engravings illustrating the major political events of the time, as well as historical subjects in the neoclassical style, which he exhibited at the Salons of 1791 and 1793.
