It was in 1904 that the Santos was born, fruit of the friendship between Louis Cartier and the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The latter, a pioneer in aviation, expressed his frustration at not being able to read the time easily while flying with his pocket watch. Sensitive to this issue, Louis Cartier then designed the first wristwatch for men, once reserved for women (ladies' watch); and marks a real revolution in a world where pocket watches still dominated. The Santos was also the very first watch for aircraft pilots, intended for a specific audience, with precise requests, other than the simple reading of the time.
