A rare painting by Georges Manzana-Pissarro from around 1910–1920 depicting a young Tahitian woman sitting nude, wearing a wreath of flowers in her hair.
This work naturally brings to mind Paul GAUGUIN’s* depictions of Tahitian women, discovered in 1891, which influenced Manzana-Pissarro.
Note the use of gold paint, which lends this composition a unique character; depending on the viewing angle, the gilding appears even more dazzling !
Tahitian women are among the artist’s rarest and most sought-after subjects.
The work for sale comes from the estate of Manzana-Pissarro, which was auctioned on March 9, 2005, by Aguttes (approximately one hundred works by the artist were sold that same day).
* Influenced by the work of Paul Gauguin, Georges Manzana-Pissarro drew inspiration from Gauguin’s explorations of color, exoticism, and female figures, particularly the famous Tahitian women. However, he developed a highly personal style, in which these influences blend with a pronounced taste for ornamentation and decorative refinement.
Some of his works are accented with gold or silver, bringing light, depth, and a sense of luxury to his compositions, in the spirit of early 20th-century decorative arts.

Georges Henri Manzana-Pissarro (1871–1961) was a French painter, printmaker, interior designer, and furniture designer.
He was the son of Camille Pissarro, one of the founders of Impressionism.
Trained by his father from childhood, he adopted the name “Manzana” from his grandmother to distinguish his artistic career.
After early works influenced by Impressionism, he quickly established himself with a personal style blending Symbolism, Japonism, Art Nouveau, and later Art Deco. A remarkably versatile artist, he created paintings, watercolors, engravings, ceramics, tapestries, wallpapers, lighting fixtures, and furniture, collaborating with several manufacturers and interior design firms. His works, inspired by nature, Orientalist scenes, and female figures, are distinguished by their elegance, refined lines, and rich color palette.
Exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne, and in numerous galleries, Georges Manzana-Pissarro gained international renown. Long overshadowed by his father’s fame, he is now recognized as one of the leading decorative artists of the first half of the 20th century, whose works are sought after by collectors and regularly featured in public auctions.
