Painted in 1961, this work belongs to the famous series that Vladimir Igoshev dedicated to the indigenous peoples of the Russian Far North. It depicts a young reindeer herder dressed in the traditional attire of the taiga regions, a testament to an ancestral way of life deeply connected to the natural environment.

Beginning in 1954, Igoshev made numerous trips to the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. He devoted a significant portion of his work to the Khanty, the Mansi, and other small indigenous peoples of northern Russia. He observed and painted their faces, traditional clothing, customs, and the environment in which they lived with extraordinary sensitivity. Today, these works also hold significant documentary value, as they preserve the memory of customs, objects, and ways of life that, during the second half of the 20th century, have partly disappeared or undergone profound changes.

Although he studied, taught, and achieved official recognition in Moscow, Vladimir Igoshev constantly returned to the Far North, to which he remained deeply attached. Nicknamed the “singer of the North,” he is considered one of the leading artistic interpreters of the peoples of Northern Siberia. His work is frequently associated with the suròvyj stil (“austere style”), one of the most significant movements in Soviet painting of the 1960s, characterized by a subdued color palette, vigorous brushwork, and an authentic portrayal of humanity confronting the harshness of climate and nature.

This work was created in the same year that the artist was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the RSFSR. He was later named People’s Artist of the RSFSR and appointed professor at the Moscow Institute of Architecture. His works are now housed in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and numerous public and private collections around the world.

The reverse side bears the original handwritten title in Russian (“Оленевод” – Reindeer Herder), a label from the USSR Art Salon identifying the work and the artist, as well as period documentation dedicated to Vladimir Igoshev. In 2001, a house-museum dedicated to him was inaugurated in Khanty-Mansiysk, paying tribute to the artist who made the indigenous peoples of Russia’s Far North the central theme of his work.
