Italian-style Pedestal Table With Blackamoore Children's Floor Lamp, Venice, 19th Century
Small Italian stool or tripod torch-holder table, carved wood in the Blackamoore* Venetian Baroque style, depicting an exotic child as a caryatid carrying the tabletop on her head, with a leaf-motif and stylized base, from Venice — Italy, dating from around 1870, 19th century.
This stool is in good condition and is of veryhigh quality. The child was likely meant to hold objects in his hands (probably a cup and a bunch of grapes).
Please note: a few minor chips and missing pieces of wood (particularly on the base, see red arrow), some scratches, soiling, and signs of age; see photos.
* Blackamooris a type of figure in European decorative art, typically found in works from the early modern period, depicting a man of Sub-Saharan African origin, usually in clothing that suggests high status. Common examples of objects and items decorated in the Blackamoor style include sculpture, jewelry, and furniture. Typically, the sculpted figureswere depicted carrying something, such as candles or a tray. They thus servedas an exotic and lighthearted variation on the “Atlas” in architectureand the decorative arts, particularly popular during the Rococo period.
