Medieval Flemish Knife In Its Original Condition – Saint Barbara – 15th/16th Century, High Middle Ages

Medieval Flemish knife in its original condition – Saint Barbara – 15th/16th century, High Middle Ages

A rare medieval knife of Flemish manufacture, preserved in a remarkable state of authenticity, with all of its original components.

The steel blade bears the cutler’s mark, depicting a wheel or a stylized sun, a hallmark of the craftsman. The handle retains its original wood as well as its bronze pommel.

The ferrule is adorned on one side with an engraving depicting Saint Barbara, identifiable by the tower pierced with three windows, her principal iconographic attribute. This tower symbolizes both her martyrdom and her profession of faith in the Holy Trinity. The reverse side is decorated with an elegant engraved geometric pattern.

Knives of this quality, which have remained complete and in their original condition, have become particularly rare on the market. This example is a valuable testament to Flemish cutlery from the late Middle Ages.

Length: 16.1 cm.

A collector’s item of great interest, both for enthusiasts of antique weapons and for collectors of medieval objects and historical cutlery.
