A Devotional Image Depicting Saint Paul The First Hermit
An engraved devotional image depicting Saint Paul, the first hermit, regarded by Christian tradition as the father of hermits. The saint is shown in the desert, raising his hand toward the raven that brings him his daily bread, according to the hagiographic account. At his side are a crucifix, a rosary, and a prayer book, while a landscape stretches out in the background.
The print bears the Latin title “S. Pavlvs Primvs Eremita” and the engraved signature “C. Galle,” corresponding to the Flemish engraver Cornelis Galle (1576–1650), a member of a famous dynasty of Antwerp engravers whose religious works were widely distributed throughout Europe.
