Safe-conduct for the 17th

the Count of Nancré, Lieutenant General of the King, Field Marshal of a cavalry regiment, and governor of the town and castellany of Ath.

To allow free and safe passage back and forth.

Mr. Dandoy de Moneux (or a similar spelling), a cornet (cavalry officer) of the Valette Regiment, who has returned ill and is traveling to France with his valet, is to move about freely. We ask all authorities to allow him to pass without causing him any harm, and to grant him all necessary aid and assistance. Done at Ath on the eighth day of November 1674.

The red seal and signature of the Count of Nancré confirm its authenticity and serve as evidence of Louis XIV’s military administration.

This safe-conduct is dated November 8, 1674, a few weeks after the Battle of Senette (August 8, 1674), one of the largest battles of that war. At that time, many wounded or sick soldiers and officers were issued a safe-conduct to return to France.

He distinguished himself during the crossing of the Scheldt by the King's troops—commanded by the Count of Harcourt—and at the defeat of the Duke of Lorraine's troops near Valenciennes in 1649; at the siege of Sainte-Menehould on October 22, 1653; at the siege of Montmédy in August 1657; and at the siege of Dunkirk in 1658, where he commanded a battalion of the Guards regiment. He was present at the Battle of the Dunes on June 14, 1658, where he also commanded a battalion of the Guards regiment. The victory in this battle was owed to his foresight and a skillful maneuver he executed. He was rewarded for this significant service with the rank of *maréchal de camp* (major general), to which he was promoted the following July 20. In this capacity, he served throughout the remainder of the 1658 campaign under the command of Marshals Turenne and de La Ferté, notably serving at the siege of Gravelines, where he commanded the two battalions of the French Guards present with the army.

On November 20 of the same year, he obtained the infantry regiment previously held by the Marquis de Beauvau and was appointed Governor of Le Quesnoy on the same day. On May 5, 1669, he was given the governorship of the town and castle of Ath, and was appointed their castellan on July 13, 1670.

He was made a lieutenant general in 1672 and served in that capacity in the corps commanded by the Count de Chamilly.
