Vintage Modernist Bas-relief With Birds, Custom Ceramic Assemblage, Circa 1950
This high-relief composition, which is astonishing to say the least, is presented as a relief, edged with a wooden strip and mounted on a canvas backing.
Two “strange” birds with decidedly stylized lines are depicted here, each perched on a small outcrop facing the other; these two protagonists of the scene seem to be conversing or sizing each other up.
Although I have not identified the creator of this work—which must be one of the rarest design objects—I would like to point out that the artist’s monogram is inscribed in the lower right corner.
The back is “covered” with wine-colored felt.
Note: For your information, this item comes from the estate of an architect in Bordeaux; this 1950s home was entirely furnished with furniture and lighting fixtures by renowned designers.
