Polychrome majolica bowl, attributed to Thomas Sergent (1830–1890)

Exceptional central bowl in glazed ceramic in the Neo-Renaissance style, attributed to Thomas Sergent, a renowned French ceramicist known for his creations inspired by the Palissy School.

This spectacular piece rests on a sculpted pedestal composed of three putti supporting a large bowl with a fluted rim. The front is adorned with a remarkable mascaron depicting the Green Man, surrounded by foliage in relief, while the base evokes an aquatic scene animated by vegetation. The piece is enhanced by a rich polychrome palette featuring shades of green, blue, brown, and ivory, characteristic of works from the second half of the 19th century.

With its high-quality modeling, delicate reliefs, and deep glazes, this work perfectly illustrates the era’s taste for naturalistic and mythological motifs. A true collector’s piece, it will fit equally well in a classical interior or in a collection of antique ceramics.
