Rooster, model designed circa 1895–1896
Large polychrome glazed ceramic clock sculpture, circa 1900

An iconic figure of French Art Nouveau ceramics, this spectacular barnyard rooster perfectly illustrates Edmond Lachenal's ability to combine decorative sculpture with functional design. Proudly standing atop a leafy mound incorporating a circular clock dial, the bird is rendered with remarkable vitality and a keen sense of movement. Rich polychrome glazes in deep blues, greens, browns and whites enhance the naturalistic modelling of the plumage, while the sweeping tail feathers lend elegance and dynamism to the composition.

Designed around 1895–1896, this model exemplifies the revival of artistic ceramics at the end of the nineteenth century, a period during which Lachenal established himself as one of France's leading ceramic artists. The exceptional quality of the glazes, the vigorous modelling and the seamless integration of the clock mechanism make this work a highly desirable piece for collectors of Art Nouveau.

The work is signed "LACHENAL" at the base, beneath the dial, and also bears the impressed "LACHENAL" factory mark underneath the base, confirming its authenticity.
