Émile Guillemin and Alfred Barye – Arab Horseman Returning from the Hunt

After Émile-Coriolan-Hippolyte Guillemin (1841–1907) and Alfred Barye, known as Barye fils (1839–1882).

An important Orientalist spelter group with a two-tone patina, depicting an Arab horseman returning from the hunt, mounted on a richly caparisoned horse.

Wearing a turban and an elaborately detailed traditional costume, the rider carries his game behind the saddle. The horse is portrayed in a lively and elegant pose, with one foreleg raised. Particular attention has been given to the modelling of its musculature, mane and richly ornamented harness.

The group rests upon an oval naturalistic base modelled as rocky ground. This impressive composition exemplifies the great popularity of Orientalist sculpture in France during the late 19th century.

Early French edition cast, signed “Eᵐᵉ Guillemin” on the base and bearing the circular stamp “Fabrication Française – Paris – Made in France”, decorated with a flaming crucible.

French work, late 19th–early 20th century.
