Captured in a moment of complete abandonment, the sitter appears absorbed in sleep. Seen at close range, his face gradually emerges from a rich interplay of deep browns, muted reds and chalky whites, before dissolving once more into the surrounding darkness.

The artist works with remarkable freedom, alternating translucent scumbles, broad movements of the brush and thicker highlights applied to the forehead and hair. The contours remain deliberately unresolved: rather than describing each form precisely, the painter seeks to convey a presence, an atmosphere and the shifting effects of light.

This manner of allowing the figure to emerge directly from the painted surface places the sketch within the most experimental current of British Romantic painting around 1830. Its warm palette, the progressive dissolution of the subject and the central importance given to light bring the work particularly close to the world of J. M. W. Turner and the artists working within his immediate circle.

More than a simple head study, this small panel possesses the intensity of an intimate vision. Its swift and instinctive execution, strikingly modern in its freedom, gives the work a presence far greater than its modest dimensions.
