A superb new oil-on-canvas painting by Jean Teilliet depicting a landscape with a stream in Limousin, signed in the lower left corner.
Dimensions of the painting alone (unframed): 60x73 cm; 71.5x84 cm including the frame.
The painting is in very good original condition, having been cleaned very recently; it is delivered in a period gilded frame, which has some missing areas and has been regilded in places.

This is a new Post-Impressionist work by Jean Teilliet—a composition of magnificent quality, as is its subject: a stream bank surrounded by boulders in the Limousin region... Perhaps it is the Glane, or perhaps the Gartempe—two rivers he painted frequently. He employs his characteristic brushwork and, here, a most subtle palette where the grays, mauves, and blues of the rocks blend with greens, yellows, pinks, beiges, etc....

Jean-Cyprien Teillet was born on September 4, 1870, in Saint-Junien, at his parents’ home on Rue Saler (now Faubourg Liebneck). He was the son of Pierre-Séverin, a medical doctor, and Marie-Alexine Laveyssière.
Growing upamong the greatest artists of the time (his mother was a musician, and his grandparents hosted Lamartine, Musset, and Corot), his artistic talent was strongly encouraged. After studying at the Collège de Saint-Junien, Jean-Cyprien, who was passionate about painting, went on to the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges, then the School of Fine Arts in Paris.
He exhibited at the most famous Parisian salons—the Indépendants, the Artistes Français, and others...

In 1904, he founded, along with a few friends, founded the “Limousins de Paris” association, and that same year he organized a major artistic festival in Saint-Junien, during which the “Corot Site” was inaugurated.Passionate about his region, he undertook after World War I to collect the songs and dances of the Limousin to save them from oblivion.
He divided histime between his home in Saint-Germain-de-Confolens (16) and his home in Saint-Junien, which he had restored to his own taste. It wasin 1925 that he founded “La Noce Villageoise Limousine de Saint-Junien,” a group of singers and dancers carrying on the traditions of their ancestors. Dictionaries and Encyclopedias He also founded the Saint-Junien Municipal Museum in 1929. He died on October 23, 1931.
He was also the teacher and friend of another famous Limousin painter, Suzanne Léger.
