Processional Canopy, France, 18th Century
A painted and gilded carved wooden processional canopy decorated with Corinthian columns, candlesticks, acanthus leaves, and croziers. Original blue-and-white paint; central panel in faux marble of the same color. This canopy originally had wooden poles for carrying it during processions; it now rests on a later-added iron base so it can be used as a display stand. Pieces like this are rarely seen on the market due to their rarity and original purpose: a display case for precious objects.
