Art Nouveau Glazed Stoneware Vase With Owl Decoration – Bohemia (turn-teplitz), Circa 1900
An exceptional and imposing glazed stoneware vase from the Art Nouveau period, notable for its spectacular high-relief decoration depicting a majestic owl with its wings spread wide, perched on a branch. The highly refined modeling realistically captures the plumage.
The owl is a symbol of wisdom and mystery.
The design extends harmoniously along the sides and around the back with a stylized woodland landscape featuring trees, vegetation, and a starry sky, in a decidedly Symbolist spirit. The flared collar is adorned with a frieze of stars in relief, a particularly original decorative element that gives this piece a unique character.
The magnificent glossy glaze features deep shades of cobalt blue and emerald green with bronze-brown highlights, elegantly accentuating the sculpted forms.
The quality of the modeling, the richness of the glazes, and the decorative vocabulary undeniably link this work to the prestigious productions of Turn-Teplitz (Bohemia), created around 1900 in the circles of the Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel (Amphora), and Eduard Stellmacher, famous for their Art Nouveau animal-themed creations.
No identical examples have been found to date, suggesting that this is a rare piece.
