Silver Snuff Box From Holland (schoonhoven), Workshop Of The Widow Of Hermanus Jacobus Van Halteren, 1874

A lovely little rectangular silver snuff box with rounded corners, made in Schoonhoven (Holland) in 1874.
Both sides are adorned with a hand-engraved and hand-stamped design. The main side features, at its centre, an elegant stylised floral motif, comprising a sinuous stem blossoming into a flower. This design is framed by vertical friezes alternating between wavy lines, dotted lines and motifs created with a punch. The domed lid is accented, along its lower edge, by an engraved frieze repeating the same decorative motifs. The reverse is also decorated with a stylised plant motif, executed in the same style as the main face, which gives the piece a harmonious design on both sides.
The interior is plain and unadorned. The hinge is original and functions correctly.

This box bears the original hallmarks attesting to its manufacture in the Netherlands: the silver fineness mark (lion), the assay office mark (helmeted head), the date letter ‘P’ corresponding to the year 1874, and a master’s mark that is partially worn but still distinctive enough to be attributed to the widow of Hermanus Jacobus van Halteren.
Hermanus Jacobus van Halteren practised in Schoonhoven from 1832 to 1867. He specialised in particular in the manufacture of snuff boxes, vinegar cruets and book bindings. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his wife, Z.K.M. Streef, who continued to run the workshop until 1895, before handing the business over to their son, Johannes van Halteren.
The correspondence between the date letter ‘P’ (1874) and the maker’s mark allows this box to be attributed to the workshop of Hermanus Jacobus van Halteren’s widow.

This box illustrates the quality of small Dutch utilitarian silverwork from the second half of the 19th century, when objects intended for everyday use were adorned with particularly meticulous engraved decoration.

Condition: in good condition, with a lovely antique patina and slight signs of wear consistent with its age. There are a few slight dents, which do not affect the appearance of the item. Original hinge, in working order.
