Mathilde Grün is the mother of Jules Grün.
In 1881, Rodolphe Salis opened the cabaret Le Chat Noir at 84 Boulevard Rochechouart, right next to Mathilde Grün’s antique shop (located at No. 86). Fascinated by shadow puppet shows, Jules Grün went on to become an illustrator and painter.
The painting is heavily inspired by his son’s works (still lifes on a black background); it came from the Rodolphe Salis estate sale in Chatellerault in 1965.
Signed “MG 1901” on the edge of the pedestal table.
