Carved Solid Walnut Side Table, Northern Italy, Late 17th Century

Carved solid walnut "fratino" table, Northern Italy, late 17th century
Dimensions: 143.5 cm L x 89 cm D x 80 cm H; tabletop thickness 4 cm

This refectory table, called "fratino", was crafted in Northern Italy towards the end of the 17thcentury. Made of solid walnut, it features the characteristic carving ofrefectory tables: austere and robust, with a rustic top and shaped legs with asinuous, undulating profile. For added stability, the legs are joined by astretcher. In this particular piece, the stretcher—crafted from antique17th-century wood—was added during a 19th-century restoration, replacingoriginal iron supports that were once affixed beneath the center of thetabletop, the traces of which are still visible today. The refectory table style originated in monasteries and Italian nobleresidences, where it served both as a worktable and for dining. The essentialstructure, combined with the flowing lines of the legs, emphasizes thepractical function of the piece. When placed in classic, rustic, or moderninteriors, it becomes a highly decorative element with great charm.
