Porcelain Cup And Saucer, Blue Base With Gold Landscape Decoration, Giustiniani Manufactory
A set consisting of a porcelain cup and saucer with a cobalt-blue background, featuring a rich garland of gilded oak leaves framing the figurative designs. The motifs, hand-painted with fine polychrome brushstrokes, depict views of the Neapolitan coast:
• on the cup, the Palazzo di Donn’Anna in Posillipo, with two fishermen in the foreground;
• on the saucer, the Temple of Apollo on Lake Averno.
On the reverse of both pieces are handwritten captions in iron red: “View of the Palazzo di D. Anna in Posillipo” and “Temple of Apollo on Lake Averno,” in accordance with the typical practice of 19th-century Neapolitan manufacturers of identifying landscape subjects intended for the Grand Tour market.
The decorative style—blue background, a cartouche with gilded laurel and oak leaves, and views of Campania with captions—is characteristic of Neapolitan production from the first half of the 19th century, attributable to the Giustiniani or Del Vecchio workshops.
