Isaac Blesses Jacob
Artist: Andrea Casali
This small canvas is an important addition to Andrea Casali's private devotional oeuvre. A student of Sebastiano Conca and Francesco Trevisani, he discovered in Rome the art of blending Neapolitan chromaticism with Roman academic linearity. The composition depicts an episode narrated in the book of Genesis, when Jacob, incited by his mother Rebecca to impersonate his brother Esau, receives the blessing of the elderly and now blind Isaac. Jacob's feminine face echoes Trevisani's expressive patterns, as do the vibrant colors and full-bodied brushstrokes. The physiognomies and facial definition appear more typical of Casali, and are consistently found in the artist's works. The compositional balance, the quality of the pictorial layering, and the refined narrative orchestration testify to the artist's ability to translate a complex biblical episode into a scene of intense domestic intimacy, intended for a refined and private viewing.
