A bustling street scene in front of a mosque in Istanbul was painted around the 1920s by the Franco-Polish Orientalist painter Jozef Pawlikiewicz, who traveled to Turkey, where he created numerous views of Istanbul at the turn of the 20th century. His watercolors of Istanbul are regularly sold at Polish and French auctions.
Inscription: titled and signed “Stambul. J. Pawlikiewicz” in the lower left corner and titled with the street name in French: “Rue d ..Ey..li," at the bottom right, on the reverse of the watercolor—an old inscription in German: "Gruss aus Konstantinopel" (English: "Greetings from Constantinople from your Pohly Angelides").
Inscription: Signed at the bottom left.
Technique: watercolor on paper, matted and in its original period frame.
Dimensions: unframed 16 x 23 cm, framed 29 x 39 cm.
