19th-century Oil On Wood After Perugino – “the Family Of The Virgin”

19th-century oil on wood after Perugino – “The Family of the Virgin”

A superb 19th-century oil on wood panel, painted after Perugino’s famous composition (Pietro Vannucci). The original, housed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, depicts one of the major themes of the Italian Renaissance: The Family of the Virgin.

The scene is centered on the seated Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus, surrounded by Saint Anne and members of the Holy Family, arranged in a semicircle on an architecturally designed platform. The background, punctuated by arches and steps, lends depth and balance, while the children seated on the steps add a lively and warm touch.

Painted in oil on panel, the work features light skin tones, smooth drapery, and a harmonious palette of blues, reds, and golds, typical of 19th-century academic copies. The composition is luminous, clear, and decorative, faithful to the spirit of the Italian Renaissance.

It is set in a 19th-century gilded wooden frame with broad moldings, adorned with acanthus leaves, a beaded frieze, and floral motifs in relief at the corners. The gilding, with a slight patina, casts warm highlights that emphasize the verticality and nobility of the scene.

A cohesive, elegant piece ready to hang, ideal for a classic interior or a decorative collection.
