Hereke Silk Rug – Turkey, circa 1960

Dimensions: 144 × 101 cm

A masterpiece of Oriental textile art

A magnificent Hereke carpet woven entirely of silk, made in Turkey around 1960, from the prestigious Hereke workshops, renowned worldwide for the exceptional quality of their creations intended for palaces and grand estates.

With a remarkable density of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 knots per square decimeter, this rug exemplifies the craftsmanship of the finest master weavers. Every detail is executed with remarkable precision, offering a richness of design and a delicacy rarely found.

Description of the Design

The field is enlivened by an elegant vase of flowers—a symbol of abundance and prosperity—from which rises a majestic Tree of Life. Its delicate branches bear a profusion of tulips, carnations, palmettes, and stylized flowers, harmoniously arranged in a perfectly balanced composition.

The spandrels are richly decorated with foliage scrolls and arabesques, while the multiple borders feature a succession of rosettes, palmettes, floral interlacing, and Ottoman motifs, attesting to the extreme finesse of execution characteristic of the finest Hereke carpets.

Color Palette

The color palette is exceptionally elegant. The luminous, silky cream-ivory background highlights deep ruby-red and burgundy borders. The motifs are rendered in delicate shades of sky blue, turquoise, midnight blue, olive green, soft green, golden yellow, beige, and brown, offering a harmonious and refined contrast.

Thanks to the exceptional quality of the silk, the rug reveals magnificent iridescent sheen that shifts with the light and viewing angle—a highly sought-after characteristic of high-quality Hereke rugs.
