A Contribution By Benn, An Artist Of Polish Origin
Artist: Benn
A charming colored-pencil drawing on the inside back cover of the catalog for Benn’s 1970 exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
Benn, the pseudonym of Bencjon Rabinowicz, was born in Białystok in 1907. Talented as a draftsman, he began giving lessons at the age of 12. A scholarship from his hometown enabled him to move to Paris in 1930 to study for three years, notably under Fernand Léger. He became a naturalized citizen in 1938, was drafted in 1939, wounded in May 1940, and joined the Resistance alongside Paul Eluard. After the war, he exhibited regularly in France and abroad in galleries and museums, and was considered one of the leading members of the School of Paris.
