A large crowd surrounds the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and the crucified Christ, crowned with thorns, flanked by the two thieves who are also crucified.
In the foreground, a soldier hurls insults at Christ, while others, crouched on the ground, are gambling for the garments of the crucified man.
