Rare wool Aubusson tapestry, woven from an original designby Jean Lurçat (1892–1966), a leading figure in the revival ofFrench tapestry in the 20th century. Based in Aubusson from 1939 onward,Lurçat revolutionized the art of weaving by developing a powerful andinstantly recognizable decorative style, now sought after bycollectors around the world.
This work, titled “Poisson,” was produced by theAteliers Simone André in Felletin, a workshop renowned for the quality of itsweaves based on designs by Aubusson’s greatest cartoonists.
The design, of remarkable intensity, features astylized fish in vibrant colors set against a deep black background, within avegetal and cosmic universe typical of Jean Lurçat’s work. The richness of thecolors, the finesse of the weaving, and the graphic power of the composition make ita decorative piece of the very highest order.
The tapestry is signed in the weave and retains on the reverse sideits original ribbon label, which reads:
