Diorama, Globe, Religious Sugar Figurines, Papier-mâché, Napoleon III, 18th-century Style
An old folk devotional piece dating from the second half of the 19th century.
The piece is displayed under its original glass dome.
A miniature scene crafted from polychrome molded sugar, complemented by papier-mâché and fabric flowers.
It depicts the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph praying before a saint.
Highly prized in the Catholic regions of France, Alsace, Lorraine, Germany, and Austria, these small devotional dioramas were given as gifts on the occasion of a First Communion, a wedding, a pilgrimage, or a Confirmation.
Made from a material as precious as it is fragile—molded sugar—they were always protected by a glass dome to keep them safe from moisture.
Few examples have survived to the present day in satisfactory condition.
