Alabaster Sculpture , Young Woman With A Broken Jug , d'Aprés Greuze , Style XVIIIe Florence
Ancient & elegant female figure featuring the famous sentimental theme of "The Broken Jug", inspired by the masterpiece painted by Jean-Baptiste Greuze in the 18th century.
The young woman is depicted standing in a gentle, melancholy attitude, holding a damaged amphora against her, a symbol of fragility and lost innocence.
The sculpture captivates with its fine modeling, delicate treatment of the face, supple drapery and elegance very characteristic of Italian decorative productions of the early 20th century. The work on the hair and the folds of the garment testify to true craftsmanship.
The work is made of sculpted alabaster.
Some traces of original polychromy can still be seen in the hairstyle.
The base bears the engraved signature "AD ZOP FIRENZE", indicating a Florentine production. At this time, Florence was an important center for the creation of objets d'art and decorative alabaster sculptures for bourgeois homes and grand European hotels.
