Maimâna Kilim, Afghanistan, 300 X 232 Cm

Afghan wool kilim, circa 1970. Very good condition.

The city of Maimâna (or Maïmana) is located in a province in northern Afghanistan, on the border with Turkmenistan.
Part of Joseph Kessel’s novel, *Les Cavaliers*, takes place in the Maimâna region.

Kilims woven in this region have always been beautifully crafted.
They are easily recognizable by their geometric patterns—simple and elegant—in deep shades of brown, red, and orange.
This kilim features a traditional design. Two asymmetrical diamond shapes in the center are framed by various borders: “aleh abassi” (tulip borders), “running water” or “eagle’s beak” (hooks), and “göls” (flowers).
