Two techniques were used for this Shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally the front of the bag) and kilim bands (originally the back of the bag). On the soumak section, light borders composed of the 'S' motif frame a border featuring zoomorphic spider motifs, which are also found in the center. Beautiful harmony of colors in both the soumak and the kilim (abrached 'plum' tones).
*Soumak: a wrapped weaving technique (embroidery), called suzan in Iran, suzani meaning 'embroidered with a needle'.
The territory of the Shahsavans is located south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Composed of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik, and Caucasian ethnic groups, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
