Two techniques used for this Shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally, front of the satchel) and banded kilims (originally, back of the satchel). Two motifs in the center are each framed by an octagon representing the universe. Various patterns: eight-pointed stars of Medes, zoomorphic, brickwork.
*Soumak: wrapped weft weaving technique (embroidery), called suzan in Iran, suzani meaning 'needle-embroidered'.
The territory of the shahsavans is located south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnic groups, the shahsavan confederation was formed under the reign of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
