René Camille Juste (1868–1954) was one of the painters associated with the Crozant School. Born in Paris, he established his studio in Marlotte (Seine-et-Marne), where he also served as the museum’s curator. A student of Fernand Cormon, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1902. Close friends with the painter Albert Joseph, he traveled with him to England, Italy, and the Maghreb before exploring together the most beautiful sites in France, notably Brittany, the Creuse, Collioure, and the Île-de-France region.
After an initial Pointillist period—in which he excelled and which echoed the artistic explorations of his friend Léon Detroy—René Juste evolved his style toward a more personal approach, characterized by broad swaths of color, halfway between Impressionism and Fauvism. In Crozant, he rubbed shoulders with leading figures of the Crozant School, such as Armand Guillaumin, Paul Madeline, Léon Detroy, and his faithful companion Albert Joseph.
His works are now part of several public collections, notably at the Musée du Luxembourg and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours.
