The origin of our painting can be traced to an icon depicting the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, which has been the object of special devotion since at least the 13th century.
This icon is located in the Pauline (or Borghese) Chapel of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. According to tradition, it is attributed to Saint Luke the Evangelist.
Over the centuries, the growth of Marian devotion and numerous pilgrimages led to the creation of copies of the original icon, including the one we are presenting today.
