Great 18th-century Neoclassical Painting, Aurora Triumphing Over Night
An important Italian painting from the second half of the 18th century. This oil on canvas artwork, attributed to the great Tuscan painter Giuliano Traballesi (1731–1812), depicts a rare Allegory of Aurora Triumphing over Night. (This attribution is consistent both stylistically and iconographically and is further supported by the expertise of art historian Federica Spadotto, who dates the painting to the Florentine master's late maturity.)
The composition's protagonist is an idealized young female figure, seated with composed elegance and crowned with a delicate garland of roses. In her left hand, Aurora gracefully holds a small bird perched on her finger, a traditional symbol of nature's awakening and the heralding of a new day. Beside her, a putto holds a smoldering torch, an allusion to the night fading before the arrival of light, while the other two putti weave and gather roses, recalling the rebirth of nature.
The painting is distinguished by the perfect balance of the masses, the classical elegance of the poses, and the extraordinary quality of the execution. Aurora's face, with its delicate features and serene expression, reveals a sophisticated academic sensibility, while the soft modeling of the flesh tones and the natural anatomies of the putti testify to the hand of an artist with a high level of figurative culture.
Particularly remarkable is the magnificent drapery enveloping the main figure. The wide folds of the pink cloth, enlivened by highlights and delicate chiaroscuro effects, lend monumentality to the figure without sacrificing the lightness typical of eighteenth-century taste. The sage green of the robe, embellished with a refined blue band decorated with neoclassical gold motifs, creates a refined chromatic dialogue with the pink of the cloak and the warm tones of the flesh tones.
Artwork of great elegance and remarkable pictorial quality, ideal for historic homes, professional studios, and prestigious spaces furnished in a classic or contemporary style. The spectacular 20th-century gilded wood frame is beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in small areas. Overall, in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 115 x W 95 cm.
