800/1000 Sterling Silver Soup Tureen, Italy, Early 20th Century
Soup tureen or centerpiece in 800/1000 sterling silver, made in Italy, early 20th century. Circular body with smooth, domed sides, encircled by a pretty row of beads along the rim and resting on a molded pedestal. Two side handles in the form of volutes, wide-spreading, with clean and even craftsmanship.
The lid, which fits perfectly, is topped with a sculpted pine cone-shaped knob, surrounded by finely chased leaves. The interior features deep fluting and clean, uniform hammering. The piece as a whole displays a beautiful consistency of style, with straightforward metalwork that is free of excessive ornamentation.
On the inside of the base, two regulatory hallmarks certify the silver as 800/1000, accompanied by the letter I, the identifying mark of an Italian workshop active in the early 1900s.
