Black Marble Obelisk From The Grand Tour Of Rome, 19th Century
Black marble obelisk decorated with hieroglyphs on a base bearing the inscription “Obelisco Flaminio.”
The Flaminio Obelisk was originally located in the Circus Maximus and was moved to Piazza del Popolo in 1589. In the early 19th century, Giuseppe Valadier placed it at the center of the Fountain of the Lions.
A typical Grand Tour souvenir, roughly the size of a desk ornament, it has a joint at the bottom of the base above the word “obelisk,” visible in the photo.
