19th-century Tobacco Box And Game Featuring Napoleon And Prisoners Of War
A five-part box made of carved wood, possibly chestnut, likely crafted by Napoleonic prisoners of war, consisting of a base on rounded feet, with an interior compartment, a connecting section decorated with protruding anthropomorphic heads, atop which rests a third section featuring an inlaid chessboard on top, in turn covered by a further section with a tic-tac-toe board below and a storage compartment above. This last element is surmounted by a final section decorated at the top with a gilded bronze statuette of Napoleon.
It dates to the early decades of the 19th century.
It is presumably a combined tobacco and game box made to help a prisoner of war pass the time in one of the camps where they were held, often under very difficult conditions.
Some of the pieces and the checkerboard have missing parts and show signs of wear, as seen in the photos
