Giambattista Bassi (Massa Lombarda, February 20, 1784 – Rome, July 5, 1852) was an Italian painter.
He was a highly acclaimed painter of landscapes for travelers on the Grand Tour
In Rome, he set up his studio in Via di Ripetta. He lived in Rome until his death. He distinguished himself as a respected landscape painter and was favoured by the city's nobility and also by numerous foreign collectors. He lived the best years of his artistic production from 1816 to 1826. He received commissions from Elizabeth Hervey, Duchess of Devonshire, Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, Prince Henry of Prussia, Count Esterhazy and Lady Bentinck. Thanks to the success he achieved, he repeated some paintings several times, such as The Grotto of Posillipo. He was defined in his time as the "master of realism".
