Pierre Jean Charles Deval was a French painter born on August 20, 1897, in Lyon and died on June 27, 1993, in La Valette-du-Var.
Pierre Deval was the third child of a family of silk merchants in Lyon who lived at 45 Avenue Nouailles in Lyon. Nicknamed the Master of Orvès, a self-taught artist operating outside the commercial art circles of Paris, he spent a month in Fernand Cormon’s studio and was noticed by Léonce Bénédite at the 1921 Salon, where the government acquired his Ariane.
He received the Abd-el-Tif Prize in 1922 and exhibited at the 1924 Venice Biennale.
A friend of Albert Marquet and Jean Launois, he worked with them in Morocco. He was the owner of the Orvès estate, whose park is now designated a “remarkable garden.”
Deval exhibited at the Salon d’Automne beginning in 1920, at the Salon des Tuileries (1928 and 1929), and at the Salon des Indépendants (1928), as well as at the Art français indépendant (1929), the Salon d’Automne in Lyon (1919–1925), and the Salon du Sud-Est (Lyon) beginning in 1926. He is also credited with the illustrations for *L’École des indifférents* by Jean Giraudoux
