Alexandre Francia was a traveling painter and landscape artist, a student of Louis Francia, his father. He exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon beginning in 1841, including views of Dieppe, Calais, Quimper, and Dunkirk, as well as views of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Venice. He also exhibited in London, Antwerp, and Brussels, where he settled.
Our painting is reminiscent of a “view of Loch Katrine in Scotland” that went on sale at Christie’s London in 2008 and bore the following inscription: “This watercolor, painted for me and sold to Mr. Camille Dognin; Exhibited at the Great Exhibition in Vienna in 1873./won, along with the other drawing, the/watercolor medal.”
