Medieval Heraldic Terracotta Paving Tile – 13th Century – From Aisne
A superb medieval terracotta floor tile, dating from the 13th century, adorned with an elegant heraldic motif depicting a fretted coat of arms.
These tiles were originally intended to adorn the floors of stately homes, castles, or religious buildings. Their decoration, rich in symbolic meaning, reflected the rank and prestige of their patrons.
Unfortunately, the absence of the heraldic colors—which have since faded—makes it impossible to identify with certainty the family to which this coat of arms belonged. However, this design appears to originate from the Aisne department, a region particularly rich in medieval floor tiles.
This tile is of definite heritage interest: four identical examples are preserved at the National Ceramics Museum in Sèvres (inventory nos. MNC22092-1 through MNC22092-4). A photograph of these examples can be viewed in the listing’s gallery.
The tile is in good overall condition. It measures 11.7 × 11.7 cm.
A beautiful piece, rarely seen on the market, ideal for a collection of medieval archaeology, heraldic art, or antique ceramics.
