French Louis XIV Walnut Commode, Late 17th Century, Slightly Curved Front, 130 Cm
French Louis XIV Walnut Commode, Late 17th Century, Slightly Curved Front, 130 cm
French walnut commode from the Louis XIV period, dating to the late 17th century. Veneered in walnut on a solid wood carcass, it features a slightly curved front with gently rounded sides, reflecting the evolution of French furniture during the final years of Louis XIV’s reign and anticipating the forms of the Régence period.
The commode is fitted with five drawers, comprising two small upper drawers above three full-width drawers. It displays carefully selected walnut veneers with attractive natural figuring, while the thick top with its rounded edge is original and contributes to the balanced proportions of the piece.
The construction, backboards, and visible structural elements are consistent with the period and testify to a well-made example of French craftsmanship.
The commode is structurally sound. It would benefit from cleaning, refinishing, and a few localized restorations, particularly to some areas of the veneer, to fully enhance its appearance.
