Louis XVI-period glazing bead mirror, Provençal craftsmanship.

Mirror with carved wooden glazing beads, engraved with a repoussé pattern and gilded, Provençal craftsmanship from the Louis XVI period, made in the last quarter of the 18th century.

This model features an architectural composition of glazing beads, surmounted by a richly carved, removable pediment. The pediment is dominated by a large, unfurled ribbon knot holding a circular medallion set with its original glass. Beneath this medallion are two vine branches, joined by a knotted tie, adorned with finely carved leaves and bunches of grapes. This decoration, combined with the piece’s neoclassical style, is characteristic of the work produced by Provençal workshops of this period.

The frame of the glass panel elegantly alternates between several decorative techniques. The carved and gilded sections contrast with backgrounds engraved using the “reparure” technique, adorned with delicate plant scrollwork. The four corners are highlighted by hemispherical cabochons set against striated backgrounds, while the side panels are adorned with cascading garlands of laurel leaves and terminate in bases carved with the same motif. An engraved frieze of stylized leaves also adorns the upper crossbar, enhancing the overall delicacy of the piece.

The mirror retains all of its original mercury glass panes, including the one in the top medallion. Their slight pitting and natural discoloration attest to their age and fully contribute to its charm. On this type of model, the upper medallion could, depending on the commission, be fitted with a small mirror, a painted miniature, or a portrait.

Examination of the reverse reveals a construction characteristic of Provençal workshops during the Louis XVI Neoclassical period, in the last quarter of the 18th century. The pediment is a separate element, attached to the main body by a system of tenons and mortises that allows for its removal.

The piece is in excellent condition. It retains its original gilding, which has developed a beautiful patina, as well as all of its original components. Note that the pediment was reattached in the past but is now perfectly stable; there is also some wear and minor signs of use, consistent with the piece’s age.
