Exceptional "venus" Carriage Clock From The Empire Period, Signed By Deverberie & Co.,
Exceptional Empire-period chariot clock, made in the early 19th century and signed Deverberie et Cie, Rue Barbette, Paris.
This remarkable composition depicts Venus seated in an elegant celestial chariot gliding through the clouds, accompanied by three Cupids. One gently pushes the chariot, another guides the doves that pull it, while the third triumphantly raises a butterfly, a symbol of the soul and of love.
The circular dial in deep cobalt blue enamel is one of the most spectacular features of this clock. It is animated by an exceptional openwork butterfly in gilded bronze that indicates the hours—a particularly rare and poetic design, emblematic of the refinement of Parisian clockmaking during the Empire.
The entire piece is crafted from finely chiseled bronze gilded with mercury. The quality of the chasing, the richness of the details, the modeling of the figures, the movement of the drapery, the clouds, and the doves all attest to the exceptional talent of Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764–1824), one of the greatest Parisian bronze casters of his time.
Both a sculpture and a clock, this work is a remarkable example of French decorative arts from the First Empire and ranks among the most sought-after pieces in Deverberie’s oeuvre.
