Artist: Huber Robert ?
Attributed to Huber Robert: 18th-century watercolor depicting an architectural caprice and pastoral scene
A superb watercolor and ink wash on late 18th-century period paper that we attribute to Hubert Robert; the signature is very difficult to decipher
This delicate work depicts an architectural caprice or picturesque landscape—an artistic genre highly prized by collectors on the Grand Tour. The composition features an imposing ancient temple in ruins, subtly combined with a bucolic genre scene in the foreground: a seated shepherd playing music, surrounded by his herd—a horse, cows, sheep, goats—and a cart.
Watercolor wash with pen and ink highlights on period paper.
An old cursive inscription in ink on the right, resembling a signature, is present.
Superb antique mounting with a Marie-Louise-style wash mat. Presented in its period gilded wooden frame, featuring a magnificent original patina.
In beautiful overall condition for a document of this era.
The paper displays a charming patina of age that attests to its authenticity.
The frame has a few small chips and signs of wear on the gilding.
