Crafted in finely engraved brass with an all-overfoliate decoration covering lid and sides, the box is embellished withnumerous riveted copper inlays inspired by menuki, ( ornamental fittingstraditionally found on Japanese sword mountings). These decorative elementsdepict scenes of peaceful daily life and traditional motifs in relief.
Theywere originally patinated or enhanced with a silvered finish, now largely lostthrough successive cleanings over time.The combination of finely engraved brass and thesecopper appliqués gives the piece a distinctive decorative character,characteristic of Japanese mastery of metalwork.
