800 Silver Multi-lobed Box, Probably From Italy, Circa 1890–1910

An elegant little multi-lobed box in 800 silver, probably made in Italy at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Its lid is entirely hand-engraved with an elegant floral design centred around a blooming flower, surrounded by stylised scrolls and foliage. The finesse of the engraving testifies to the meticulous craftsmanship involved. The underside features the same floral motif, giving the box a harmonious design on both sides. The rim is highlighted by a delicate engraved frieze that elegantly follows the object’s flowing contours.
The interior, simple and plain, contrasts with the rich ornamentation of the two outer sides.
This box is hallmarked 800 beneath one of the opening latches, guaranteeing a silver fineness of 800/1000. It also bears a silversmith’s mark which is now difficult to read.
With its dimensions and refined presentation, this box bears witness to the care taken in the production of functional silverware in the late 19th century, when everyday objects were adorned with particularly meticulous decoration.

Condition: In good condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
