Mikhail Andreenko, a Ukrainian painter, decorator, and writer, left a significant mark on the Constructivist and Abstract movements of the 20th century. His artistic and intellectual journey, marked by diverse experiences, helped shape his unique style and broaden the horizons of modern art.
Andreenko studied at the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg before designing sets for various theaters. He worked notably in Saint Petersburg, Odessa, Prague, Paris, and for the Royal Opera in Bucharest. These experiences in set design profoundly influenced his perception of space and artistic composition. Later, he traveled throughout Europe for a time before settling permanently in Paris in 1923, a city that was then attracting many Russian artists.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the artist turned to painting scenes of Parisian streets, thus embracing the tradition of the School of Paris. His paintings realistically depict daily life in the French capital, capturing the essence of the era and the city’s unique atmosphere.
Starting in 1958, Andreenko returned to constructivist and abstract techniques, enriching his work with bold geometry, dynamic compositions, and vibrant colors. Today, Andreenko’s works are featured in prestigious museums around the world, reflecting the international recognition he enjoys as an artist.
