A sculptor and student of the Toulouse School artists Alexandre Falguière and Antonin Mercié, as well as the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Abbal began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1896.
After World War I (1914–1918), he was most frequently seen at the Salon d’Automne.
A proponent of direct carving, he received major official commissions for the Palais de Chaillot and the war memorials in Toulouse and Moissac.
The town of Carbonne (Haute-Garonne), which features his *Harvester* in one of its squares, has dedicated a museum to him where visitors can see, in addition to models of his major works and monuments, his owls and eagle owls.
